General Description 

The Building Inspector is responsible for evaluating all YNHA buildings and properties and guiding Tenants towards compliance with code regulations. They spend much of their time on site visits, where they conduct inspections, consult with Tenants, process violations, and make recommendations regarding repairs and improvements. The housing inspector also deals with significant paperwork, as they must prepare reports and documentation for all inspections. Their work schedule is often flexible, and they may have to be available at different times of the day. Responsible for the efficient development, rehabilitation, review and proper maintenance of all houses, offices, and infrastructure of the YNHA, consistent with applicable YNHA policies, NAHASDA Regulations, Federal requirements, and Tribal ordinances. He/she is responsible for planning, coordination with Housing staff and maintenance personnel, work processes, procedures, procurement, annual and periodic reviews of housing units, cost forecasting and cost control as required by budgetary constraints, materials management, inventory control, property disposition, and equipment use.

Essential Tasks

Essential tasks represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign tasks related to the type of work of the position as necessary.


Vocational / Educational Preparation: High School Diploma or GED required; plus, post-secondary training in a related field preferred. Degree, License or Certification in building inspection, construction technology, and engineering required.


Special certifications and licenses: Requires a valid driver's license at the time of appointment and throughout employment is required for this position. Must maintain to qualify to drive a YNHA vehicle through insurance provider for the duration of employment also.


Experience Requirements: Must have proven work knowledge and experience in construction of homes as related to residential/building, and construction. Must be able to understand and evaluate architectural, mechanical, and electrical aspects of homes for detailed inspection and reporting.
